These ‘bloobs’ have had a devastating effect on marine ecosystems. The latest study, involving sophisticated computer simulations, suggests that China’s reduction in aerosol emissions may be to blame.
Aerosols, tiny particles released by factories and power plants, act as mirrors in the atmosphere, reflecting sunlight back into space and cooling the planet.
As reported by Science Alert, a reduction in aerosol emissions in China, due to stricter air quality policies, has resulted in fewer of these particles in the atmosphere.
This, unexpectedly, allows more sunlight to reach the surface of the sea, warming the water and creating ‘blobs’.
This research shows that efforts to combat air pollution, while beneficial to human health, can have an ecological impact.
These findings highlight the need for a more comprehensive approach to combating climate change and pollution, taking into account the wide-ranging effects that our actions may have.
