Paris. China won gold in the artistic swimming duet event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after the free routine held on Saturday, while the Spanish pair finished in seventh position and the Mexican was twelfth.
In the absence of the Russian swimmers, who have dominated this event at the last six Olympic Games, China stepped up to claim their throne, taking the two gold medals awarded in artistic swimming in Paris. The duo podium was completed by Great Britain and the Netherlands.
Despite having shone less in the free exercise, Chinese twins Wang Liuyi and Wang Qianyi benefited from the huge advantage they had built up on Friday with their impeccable technical routine to take gold with a total score of 566.4783.
The Asian giant thus adds its second unprecedented gold in artistic swimming after winning the team event on Wednesday.
The British duo, for their part, managed to climb to silver thanks to a great free exercise – the best score on Saturday – which allowed them to accumulate a total of 558.5367, despite finishing in fourth place on Friday.
Third place went to Dutch twins Bregje and Noortje De Brouwer with a total score of 558.3963 points.
The Spanish duo, formed by Alisa Ozhogina and Iris Tió, could not bring any further joy to the artistic swimming of their country, which on Wednesday won the team bronze with which they returned to an Olympic artistic swimming podium 12 years later.
