The damning statement came in response to the Pentagon’s decision to upgrade the status of US Forces in Japan to a joint force center under the command of a three-star officer who reported to the commander of the Indo-Pacific Command.
The announcement was made by the US Department of Defense at the end of July after a meeting of American and Japanese defense and foreign policy chiefs.
