China wants to vaccinate the elderly faster

BEIJING (Dpa-AFX) – After mass protests against the strict rules of the coronavirus, China has once again announced its intention to continue the vaccination campaign for the elderly. “We should speed up vaccination against Covid-19, especially among the elderly,” said Mi Feng, spokesman for the Beijing Health Commission on Tuesday. Currently, only about 40% of people over the age of 80 are triple vaccinated. According to experts, this could lead to many fatalities in the event of an uncontrolled corona wave.

The government had already spoken several times of wanting to continue the vaccination campaign. But even on Tuesday, there was no information on how to make concrete progress.

Thousands of people took to the streets in several cities over the weekend to protest strict zero-Covid measures such as curfews, enforced quarantines, mass testing and constant checks on corona apps.

However, the health commission did not announce a move away from the strict measures on Tuesday. He only asked that the previously announced adjustments be implemented “quickly and completely” in order to reduce the “inconvenience caused”. Authorities should also properly implement existing rules and refrain from the “wrong practice” of additional measures, he said.
