China: US playing with fire over Taiwan | Abroad

US President Joe Biden had stated earlier in the day that the US is ready to intervene militarily to aid Taiwan in a Chinese attack. Biden called that a promise the country has made on itself. Biden’s spokesman toned down his striking words shortly after the president spoke. The US is said to be committed to providing military support so that Taiwan can defend itself.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry welcomed Biden’s support. Taiwan says it will continue to invest heavily in the military, along with Japan and the US, to guarantee the security of the island.

The Communist People’s Republic of China does not recognize Taiwan as a separate state and sees it as part of China. In 1949, at the end of the Chinese Civil War, the nationalist leaders of China expelled by the communists fled to the island and established the continuation of the Republic of China.
