China, US create climate change task force

BEIJING (Reuters) – China and the United States to create a joint climate change task force, state-run Chinese news agency Xinhua said, which could be a bright spot after a heated first meeting between the two country.

When they first met under President Joe Biden on Thursday and Friday, senior Chinese and US diplomats publicly criticized their respective policies at the start of what Washington called “difficult and frank” talks in Alaska.

But the Chinese delegation said after the meeting that the two sides were “determined to strengthen communication and cooperation in the field of climate change,” Xinhua said on Saturday.

They will also meet to facilitate the activities of diplomats and consular missions, “as well as on issues related to journalists in a spirit of reciprocity and mutual benefit,” according to the report.

The U.S. Embassy in Beijing did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment on Sunday.
