[아시아경제 김유리 기자] When the United States and the European Union (EU) announced that they were sanctioning Russian officials and businesses in connection with attempts to poison Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalni, China criticized the situation as interfering with internal affairs.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Won-bin said on the 3rd, “China has expressed its position several times. How to deal with (Navalni issue) is completely Russian internal affairs,” he said. “External forces have no right to intervene in the internal affairs of a sovereign state.” He said, “I hope the countries concerned will resolve the conflict through negotiations and dialogue, not unilateral sanctions.”

The US Treasury Department announced on the 2nd (local time) that it would sanction seven senior Russian officials involved in attempts to poison Navalni and detention. Related institutions and companies were also included in the sanctions. On the same day, the EU also announced sanctions against four senior Russian officials, including Attorney General Igor Krasnov, who had been imprisoned in Navalni.
