“This is a politically motivated event,” wrote China’s mission to the United Nations in a note dated Thursday.
“We ask your mission NOT to participate in this anti-China event,” the note continued as quoted from Reuters, Saturday (8/5/2021).
China alleges that the organizers of the event, which also includes several other European countries along with Australia and Canada, are using human rights issues as a political tool to interfere in China’s domestic affairs such as Xinjiang, to create divisions and turbulence and disrupt China’s development.

“They are obsessed with provoking a confrontation with China,” the note said.
“Provocative events can only lead to more confrontation,” the note continued.
The Chinese Mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to a request for comment on this matter.
The US, German and British ambassadors will address a virtual UN event on Wednesday, along with Human Rights Watch Executive Director Ken Roth and Amnesty International Secretary General Agnes Callamard.
According to the invitation, the aim of the event is to discuss how the UN system, member states and civil society can support and advocate for the human rights of members of the ethnic Turkish community in Xinjiang.

Western states and rights groups accuse authorities in Xinjiang of detaining and torturing Uighurs in camps, which the United States calls genocide. In January, Washington banned imports of cotton and tomato products from Xinjiang on charges of forced labor.
Beijing has denied the allegations and described the camp as a vocational training center to combat religious extremism.
“Beijing has tried for years to bully the government into silence but that strategy has failed miserably, as more and more developed countries voice their horror and hatred for China’s crimes against Uighurs and other Turkish Muslims,” said the UN director of Human Rights Watch. Louis Charbonneau.
