China to build $36 million bridge in Dar es Salaam

(Ecofin Agency) – Scheduled for a duration of 24 months, the implementation of this project aims to reduce traffic congestion caused by the floods affecting the country.

Tanzania, through the Roads Agency (TANROADS), has signed a contract with the China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCL) for the construction of a bridge in the city of Dar es Salaam. The announcement was made on Tuesday October 22 on the Facebook page of the Ministry of Public Works.

At a total cost of 97.1 billion shillings ($35.6 million), the 390 m long infrastructure will be located on the Fire–Ubungo road axis. Part of a broader sanitation and road infrastructure improvement project, it aims to reduce transport congestion caused by bad weather which makes roads impassable.

« The construction of the bridge will go hand in hand with the construction of the banks of the Msimbazi River which will be implemented […] as part of the Msimbazi Valley development program », Underlines the press release.

In Tanzania, precipitation during the long rainy season (September 2023 to April 2024) further degraded mobility conditions, already made difficult by Cyclone Hidaya, which hit the Tanzanian and Kenyan coasts on May 5, 2024. Innocent Bashungwa , Tanzanian Minister of Public Works, told Parliament last May that repairing roads after the torrential rains of El Niño and the passage of Cyclone Hidaya would require a budget of 986 billion shillings (about $378 million).

According to a press release from the Tanzanian authorities, the project is part of a program to restore road infrastructure in the province of Dar es Salaam affected by El Niño rains, with a financial allocation of 125 billion shillings (46 million $) allocated by the government. The work is planned to last 24 months.
