Australia has demanded “explanations” for China’s test of an intercontinental ballistic missile today in the South Pacific Ocean, the first in decades in that region of the world.
“The Australian government has sought an explanation from China,” a Foreign Office spokesman said.
“Australia is concerned about any destabilizing action that increases the risk of error in the region and is consulting its regional partners on this matter,” the spokesman continued. The test “comes in the context of China’s rapid military build-up, which is proceeding without the transparency and assurances the region demands from major powers,” he added.
China had tested an intercontinental ballistic missile in the South Pacific in the 1980s. It usually conducts its weapons system tests within its own airspace, an analyst explained.
New Zealand earlier condemned the test, while Japan said there had been no warning from Beijing.
