Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
China reaffirms that the future Taiwan is on reunification with China. The Chinese military considers Taiwan unable to depend on the United States.
Chinese Defense Ministry Spokesman Ren Guoqiang asked Taiwan to realize that their future lies in national reunification.
“Taiwan independence means war,” said Ren, Thursday (24/6) as quoted from Reuters.
“The United States must fully understand that China’s development and growth cannot be stopped by any power,” Ren said.
Ren ensured any attempt to rely on the United States to achieve independence would end in failure.
Ren Guoqiang recalled the raid of 28 of their fighter jets into Taiwanese territory last week.
He said it was a necessary action to maintain security in the Taiwan Strait and safeguard national sovereignty.
Dozens of Chinese military aircraft including fighter jets, bombers, and anti-submarine aircraft, some of which can carry nuclear weapons, broke into Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone, Tuesday (15/6).
Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense said today’s attack on 28 fighter jets was the largest so far.
The incident came days after the United States and six other G7 countries urged China to respect human rights in Xinjiang, Hong Kong’s autonomy, and tensions in the Taiwan Strait.
Relations between China and Taiwan continued to deteriorate after Taipei was led by President Tsai Ing-wen.
He is the president of pro-democracy Taiwan. Since taking the helm in 2016, Tsai has continued to seek international recognition for Taiwan, including by drawing closer to the United States.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, however, insisted he would not allow Taiwan to become independent. He even vowed to do everything, including military war, to defend Taiwan.
The United States is Taiwan’s strongest supporter on the international stage and its main arms supplier.
Although they do not have diplomatic relations with Taiwan due to the One China policy, Washington and Taipei have a cooperation agreement. The cooperation pact covers the fields of economy to defense.
Under the agreement, the US has the responsibility to help Taiwan protect itself from the threat of Chinese aggression.
