China has congratulated upcoming US President Joe Biden on his election victory. The country “respects the choice of the American people,” a State Department spokesman said Friday. In addition to Biden, he also congratulated future Vice President Kamala Harris.
China was previously reluctant and initially only determined that Biden had declared himself the winner. Now it goes a step further.
“We congratulate Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris,” said the spokesman, who emphasized that “the outcome of the US election will be determined by US law and procedures.”
Almost a week ago, US media declared Biden the winner, but incumbent President Donald Trump refuses to admit defeat. His lawyers have filed multiple lawsuits hoping to change the outcome.
Most countries, including the Netherlands, have already congratulated Biden. Until now it has not only remained silent from China, but also from Russia. Moscow recently said it was waiting for the outcome of Trump’s lawsuits.
Turkey and Saudi Arabia initially also delayed, but later crossed the bridge. Iran, the Palestinian Authority and Israel have also congratulated Biden.
