China: – Skyscraper began to shake

On Tuesday afternoon, one of China’s tallest buildings began to shake, and complete panic broke out among the people inside the nearly 300-meter-high skyscraper.

– People fled in panic for the whole skyscraper to collapse, writes The Guardian.

– No earthquakes

The SEG Plaza building is located in the city of Shenzhen in southern China. It consists of 79 floors, and houses both a large electronics market and a number of offices.

No one was injured in the incident and the skyscraper eventually stopped shaking. Experts are now trying to find out what really happened – and how to prevent it from happening again, according to the newspaper.

“There have been no earthquakes in Shenzhen today,” Chinese authorities said in a statement after checking and analyzing data from earthquake monitoring stations across the city.

Thus, there is probably nothing under the building that has caused the incident. The experts also found no safety deficiencies in the building’s construction, and the movements in the tall skyscraper are thus a mystery.

Several buildings collapse

Tall buildings have collapsed on several occasions in China.

In 2008, several buildings collapsed after an earthquake hit Sichuan province, and in May 2020, a five-story house in Quanzhou collapsed due to insufficient construction. The building was used as quarantine hotel during the pandemic, and 29 people lost their lives.

Following a debate on the country’s construction standards, Chinese authorities last year banned the construction of skyscrapers higher than 500 meters.
