The index, jointly prepared by the China Economic Information Service (CEIS) and the Shenyang municipal government, reflects the development of rowing in Shenyang. It analyses the development path and industry characteristics of rowing in Shenyang through three dimensions: event attractiveness, industrial development and sport-city integration. The index also promotes specialized research that uses the development of international rowing as a reference.

This year’s index is the third edition of the China (Shenyang) Rowing Development Index, following publications in 2022 and 2023. The launch of the 2024 index is another step by Shenyang on its journey to becoming a city known for its strong sporting competitiveness.

As the 2024 Index shows, rowing events in Shenyang have increasingly gained industrial and international influence. The two most important indicators, the number of racing teams and athletes, take the lead nationwide. Since its establishment in 2018, the Shenyang International Open Regatta has become one of the most significant events combining culture, sports and tourism, attracting the largest number of participants in China.

As a training and competition center for rowers, the Hunhe River, which flows through southern Shenyang, has seen a boom in sports training, leisure culture, catering, experience dining, cultural tourism and other business sectors. According to the index, 390 rowing-themed cultural events were held in Shenyang in 2023. The revenue from rowing-related tourist attractions exceeded 10 million yuan (about 1.41 million U.S. dollars).
