China set to cap carbon emissions between 2021 and 2025

China set to cap carbon emissions between 2021 and 2025

Beijing – China should set an absolute cap on carbon emissions between 2021 and 2025 to support its climate goals, said the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED).

In its report, published Thursday, this advisory body to the Chinese government, specified that the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, the highest in the world at more than 10 billion tons per year, should reach a peak before 2030 , noting that China must control its absolute level of greenhouse gas emissions and impose caps on its provinces and industries.

Further, CCICED urged China to improve its carbon pricing system, design detailed plans and agenda to electrify its transportation and move away from conventional vehicles, as well as create an energy system focused on renewable energies.

According to CCICED, China should “restrict and phase out” investments in overseas coal-fired power plants, and “take the lead” in international climate cooperation and governance.
