Scientists from China have discovered a giant karst sinkhole with an ancient forest inside it, they have told several media outlets.
The sump is located at Leye, in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of southern China and is 192 meters deep. Moreover, it is home to primitive trees up to 40 meters high, according to the Xinhua news agency.
Scientists are known to have discovered three cave entrances in the chasm. To enter they had to go down with a rappel rappel system and walk several hours to reach the bottom of the sinkhole.
With the discovery, the number of such sinkholes in Leye rises to 30.
Above the sinkhole, it is 306 meters long and 150 meters wide. This was explained by Zhang Yuanhai, chief engineer of the Institute of Karst Geology.
In addition to trees, there are some plants that can reach a person’s shoulders. What’s more, the hole could hold spices not recorded before.
It should be noted that this type of sinkholes are found above all in China, Mexico and Papua New Guinea.
