China Says Metaverse Presence Will Take 6 Years

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia The movement of the Metaverse trend began to appear some time ago. However, it turns out that Chinese company Baidu estimates that Metaverse will take up to six years to become fully present.

Baidu is set to hold an annual developer event on Monday on its Metaverse app, XiRang. The company claims this will be the first Metaverse conference in China.

However, it turns out that XiRang executives noted that there is still a lot of unfinished work from Metaverse. Development of the app started last December, but it said it would take six years for a full rollout.

Responding to a question regarding the detailed application timeline, Baidu Vice President Ma Jie said, “That’s a very good question, but I may not have a good answer,” quoted from CNBC International, Saturday (12/25/2021).

Ma Jie said the Baidu app could accommodate 100,000 virtual participants for the conference. The company, according to him, has the goal of building a platform open source for Metaverse developers.

Metaverse has been talked about a lot lately. There is even a big name that has plunged into the technology, namely Facebook, which changed its name to Meta.

Not only Baidu, two Chinese technology giants Alibaba and Tencent are also known to be attracted to Metaverse. Alibaba has a website promoting its Metaverse cloud offering.

In November, Tencent President Martin Lau once asked the Chinese government to support the development of Metaverse. And also has special regulations for the Chinese market.

Many People Don’t Understand About Metaverse

Brian Tycangco, an analyst at Stansberry Research, said: “Each Metaverse is very new and there are still many people who don’t really understand the word.

“Many people don’t even fully understand what the word means today or will mean in the next 3-5 years,” he explains.

The timeline that Baidu revealed reflects the company’s understanding of the Metaverse, as well as its conservative approach to managing expectations and China’s regulatory environment.

“Baidu is clearly trying to move forward to have a Metaverse in the home market while following Beijing’s new policies aimed at preventing a monopolistic situation, therefore the platform is open,” he said.

Meanwhile Alvin Graylin, President of HTC China, said the full Metaverse will be present in 5-10 years.

“For the products and services that will comprise the Metaverse, the parts will come sooner,” Graylin said.

“The key challenges to achieving the full Metaverse ecosystem will likely be less about a specific technology or product, but more about the underlying infrastructure, international regulatory agreements, and global standards. It will take a concerted global effort across companies and governments to deliver on the Metaverse promise” .

Bill Gates also opened up about the Metaverse. He expected 2-3 years most of the virtual encounters to move to the Metaverse.
