China responds to US doping allegations

Beijing. China is fighting fire with fire in the face of persistent doping allegations that have dogged its swimmers at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

China’s Anti-Doping Agency on Thursday called for more thorough testing of American track and field competitors, citing past doping scandals in a press release.

He questioned the way the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency handled those cases.

The Chinese agency’s criticism echoes reports in government-controlled state media, which complain of double standards applied to Chinese competitors. The reports have highlighted the more than 600 tests Chinese swimmers underwent at the Paris 2024 Games, with no violations found.

The World Anti-Doping Agency and World Aquatics acknowledged that 23 Chinese swimmers tested positive for a banned substance ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. The results were not made public until they were revealed by media reports in early 2024, and both bodies accepted China’s explanation that the positive tests were caused by contaminated food.

After such details emerged, the United States launched an investigation under a law passed in 2020 that gives federal authorities the power to investigate suspected sports doping and cover-ups.

At a meeting in Paris this week, the head of China’s Olympic delegation told his American counterpart that China hopes the United States will stop its “long-arm jurisdiction” and ensure that athletes from all countries can participate smoothly and safely in the 2028 Games in Los Angeles and the 2034 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, an official Chinese sports newspaper reported.
