China Reports First Case of H10N3 Avian Influenza in Humans

China’s National Health Commission (NHC) reports findings of viral infection cases bird flu The first H10N3 in humans on Tuesday (1/6). The bird flu virus variant was found in a 41-year-old man in Zhenjiang City, Jiangsu Province.

The man has been hospitalized since April 28. He had developed a fever and other symptoms, the NHC said in a statement.

Furthermore, the man was officially diagnosed with the H10N3 bird flu virus on May 28. However, the NHC did not provide an explanation of how the man was infected with the bird flu virus.

To note, H10N3 is a type of low pathogenic virus or relatively mild. The virus found in these birds has little chance of spreading on a large scale.

Currently, the man is in stable condition and ready to be discharged from the hospital. Medical observations found no other H10N3 cases from his closest contacts.

Many types of bird flu viruses are found in the Bamboo Curtain country. Several types of avian influenza viruses sporadically infect humans who usually work on poultry farms.

However, there has been no significant number of infections from bird flu in humans since the H7N9 strain killed about 300 people during 2016-2017. The NHC also noted that no other cases of human infection with the H10N3 strain have been reported globally.
