Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
China remove party leader Communist (CCP) Xinjiang region, Chen Quango, which oversees security measures to target ethnic Muslims Uighur.
News agency Xinhua via Reuters reports, Chen will be replaced by the governor of the economic powerhouse of Guangdong Province, Ma Xingrui. However, there are no further details regarding this.
Chen has led the CCP of Xinjiang province since 2016. After leaving the department, it will move to another position.
Chen is also a member of China’s politburo and is considered a senior official in charge of the security crackdown in Xinjiang.
In 2020, the United States imposed sanctions on Chen for his role in the Uighur ethnic group.
The US frequently highlights China’s actions against the ethnic group as violating human rights.
The United Nations (UN) and human rights activists estimate that more than one million Uighur Muslims are being held in camps in the Xinjiang region. In that location they were often tortured, harassed and other forms of violence.
However, China has adamantly rejected the accusations. They have repeatedly claimed the camp as a vocational center designed to capture radical extremism.
The US has even passed a law banning imports from Xinjiang, fearing forced labor. Washington’s actions naturally infuriated Beijing.
