The name of Israel has disappeared from China’s online maps, while the country’s internationally recognized borders remain intact.
China, amid fighting in the Gaza Strip, where the Israeli army is conducting a military operation against Hamas militants, has removed the name of Israel from its online world maps.
According to WSJ, the name of the Israeli state is no longer displayed on the maps of the Chinese search engine Baidu and online maps Amap – a service owned by Alibaba. At the same time, the internationally recognized borders of Israel are still present on the mentioned services.
There were no problems with the names of other states, even such small ones as, for example, Luxembourg.
The publication’s journalists state that such ambiguity is consistent with China’s vague diplomacy in the Middle East and contrasts with Beijing’s attention to maps in general.
The newspaper notes: Chinese authorities carefully monitor “incorrect” cards in the Chinese segment of the Internet and fine “violators.” This is due to the territorial claims of the PRC in the South China Sea: the country’s government demands that the state’s internal waters be designated with a dotted line.
Let us recall that the Chinese Foreign Ministry, commenting on Israel’s military operation against Hamas, stated that the Israeli side’s actions “went beyond self-defense” and also demanded an end to “historical injustice” against Palestine.
In addition, China imposed veto on the draft UN resolution on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict submitted by the United States.
