China releases seventh national census results

China released the results of the seventh national census on Tuesday.

The census, the largest of its kind in the world, lets China know the size, structure and distribution of its population, as well as the latest demographic changes and trends, according to the State Bureau of Statistics (BES ).

The latest census carried out last year is expected to provide strong statistical support to the country, enabling it to promote high-quality development and formulate more strategies and targeted policies in order to achieve balanced and sustainable development of the population, said the BES.

A total of 679,000 census institutions have been established at the provincial, municipal, district, town and village levels of the country and more than seven million enumerators have been mobilized to collect demographic information door to door across the country. .

The data collected includes the name, ID card number, gender, marital status, education and occupation of Chinese citizens.

Mainland China’s population reached 1.41178 billion people, an increase of 5.38 percent from the 2010 level in the previous census, according to the latest census data.

The figure does not include residents of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and foreigners living in the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities on the mainland, according to the BES.

Previously, the country conducted national censuses in 2010, 2000, 1990, 1982, 1964 and 1953 respectively.
