A number of diplomats in Geneva spoke to Reuters that WHO calls for further studies in China and not other countries, in particular for audits of laboratories around Wuhan.
WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, presented the plan to member states at a closed-door meeting, Friday (16/7).
“We need information, direct information as to what the situation in this lab was before and at the beginning of the pandemic. Later when we get complete information, we can rule it out. One of the challenges again is the challenge of access and also transparency regarding the proposed hypothesis,” said Ghebreyesus. .
Ghebreyesus announced this plan a day after he said that the investigation had been hampered by a lack of raw information from the Chinese government regarding the first days of the emergence of Covid-19 cases in Wuhan.
In February, a team led by WHO researchers spent four weeks in Wuhan conducting research on the origins of the coronavirus together with Chinese researchers.
In a joint report a month later, the WHO team stated that the virus may have been transmitted from bats to humans via other animals.
Many people feel disappointed with the joint investigation of the WHO and China because it is considered not to provide new and meaningful information about the origin of the corona virus.
The head of the WHO research team on the mission even complained that they had difficulty getting and finding data during the investigation due to restrictions on the Chinese side.
Many parties, including the United States and some scientists, are demanding further investigation into the origin of the coronavirus, especially to the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The corona virus is said to have emerged and spread when the laboratory was conducting research on bats.
Beijing has so far called the theory that the Wuhan laboratory leak was behind the spread of the coronavirus “absurd.”
