China reported 76 new cases of coronavirus on Monday, the highest number since January, including 40 local infections linked to an outbreak in the eastern province of Jiangsu.
The Chinese government has had a zero tolerance policy with the coronavirus since it emerged in the city of Wuhan at the end of 2019. When an outbreak appears, it immediately confines the place and conducts massive tests on the population.
Tens of thousands of people are confined in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu, and authorities ordered tests of 9.2 million residents following an airport-related outbreak that emerged last week.
“Of the 40 local cases, 39 correspond to the province of Jiangsu and one to Liaoning,” the National Health Commission said in a statement in which it specified that there have been no new deaths from covid-19.
While Jiangsu is located north of Shanghai, Liaoning is in the northeast of the country and borders North Korea, and since Thursday it has registered five cases.
China also notes with concern an outbreak of infections in Yunnan, in the southwest, linked to neighboring Burma, where the military junta that took power in February faces major problems to contain the spread of covid-19.
The province has reported 79 cases since June 20, half of them linked to Burma.
The city of Ruili, on the border, applies a facial recognition system to monitor the movements of its inhabitants.
China has recorded 92,605 coronavirus cases and 4,636 deaths since the start of the pandemic in late 2019.
The Asian giant, where 1.4 billion people live, wants to fully vaccinate 64% of its population by the end of the year.
“As of Sunday, China has administered more than 1,500 million doses of anticovid vaccine,” said the National Health Commission, without specifying how many people have the two doses necessary to be considered fully immunized.
