China today avoided commenting on the death of the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalnyarguing that “Beijing does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries”.
“I will not comment,” the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said today at a press conference. Mao Ningwho did have words for the general secretary of the I’LL TAKE, Jens Stoltenbergwho had criticized the Chinese Government’s lack of reaction to the death in prison of the Russian opponent.
“Unlike NATO, China does not meddle in the internal affairs of other countries”said Mao, who insisted on the phrase “no comments” to the questions about the death of the Russian opponent.
Navalny, 47, died suddenly on Friday in the Arctic prison where he had been since last December, according to the Russian prison services.
China and Russia maintain close relations, especially since, in February 2022, shortly before the start of the Russian invasion of Ukrainethe presidents of both countries proclaimed in Beijing the “limitless friendship” between their nations.
Since then, they have defended that their ties “do not threaten any country” and that, in fact, they “advance the multipolarization of the world.”
On the other hand, Beijing has sought to counter criticism that it supports Russia in its campaign in Ukraine and last year presented a position paper regarding the 12-point contest that was received with skepticism by the West, while at the same time has continued to deepen its exchanges with Moscow.
