China quarantines the bills used to stop the spread of Covid-19

The Chinese People’s Bank will disinfect used banknotes by ultraviolet light or high temperatures. Other measures include the issuance of new bills and the prohibition of cash flow from one province to another.

The People’s Bank of China is withdrawing the bills used to disinfect them in an effort to stop the spread of Covid-19, which has already claimed the lives of more than 1,500 people in the Asian country, the vice president of the organism, Fan Yifei.

“After the outbreak broke out, we began to pay special attention to the safety and health of the population when using cash, and we took a series of measures,” said Fan, quoted by the Sina portal.

Another such measure is the issuance of more than 600,000 million yuan (more than 85,000 million dollars) in new bills. Previously, 4,000 million yuan (more than 570 million dollars) in new bills were urgently sent to the province of Hubei, where the deadly virus originated last December.

Further, cash flow was suspended between provinces, as well as within provinces where the epidemiological situation is more serious.

Meanwhile, used banknotes are now removed for disinfection, which is done using ultraviolet light or subjecting them to high temperatures. Subsequently, the banks seal the bills and put them in quarantine from 7 to 14 days, depending on the severity of the outbreak in one or another region, before putting them back into circulation.

However, tickets received from hospitals and agricultural markets are stored in isolation and do not return to circulation after they have been disinfected.
