Authorities in some Chinese provinces have begun to urge companies to reduce their emissions to meet climate targets. And it also affected power plants that burn brown coal. Mainly cities in the north-east of the country have introduced regulations due to lack of electricity. And this has affected the production of goods in a number of factories, such as aluminum, paper or semiconductors. According to economists, therefore, we must prepare for the fact that some goods will be in short supply in the Czech Republic.
Only car lights break the almost black darkness. The traffic lights do not work, some shops are closed and people light their candles at home like in the old days. This is the situation in some Chinese cities. “Power outages are gradually prolonging, they are now mainly early in the morning or during the day,” said one of the residents, Mr. Chai.
According to a resident of Shi Si, it can somehow be done in personal life without electricity. “It’s worse at work, as a number of factories have reduced or stopped production altogether,” Shi Si complained.
According to economist Štěpán Křeček, the Chinese government has decided to reduce its emissions. “China is the largest consumer of energy in the world and also the largest producer of greenhouse gases,” Křeček explained.
According to economist Dominik Strouhal, the second reason is the ongoing pandemic. “They could not adapt to the rapid opening of the economy, for which they were not prepared,” he told TV Nova Stroukal.
The lack of energy has already had a severe effect on the local economy – production in cement plants fell by about thirty percent, and many steel mills even stopped producing altogether. It will also have an impact on the Czech Republic. “This will mean further pressure on the growth of prices on the real estate market, building materials will become more and more expensive,” said economist Křeček.
Addiction to China
According to experts, the Chinese energy crisis is a warning to Europe to get rid of its dependence on China as soon as possible. “The European Union has selected about five thousand items of goods where it would be good to get rid of the addiction, it is necessary in the pharmaceutical industry, automotive industry,” explained economist Studnička.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, it is missing not only plastic and electronic components, but also chips. “The problems will be prolonged when we thought it would be solved in the automotive industry in months, but maybe in years,” Stroukal predicts.
According to IT expert Miloslav Lujka, the production costs of the chip are in the order of ten crowns. It is a necessary component for car production. “It is a basic component without which the vehicle cannot be put into operation, the lack of chips means that I cannot manufacture the vehicle,” said Josef Nova Pokorný from the Association of Car Importers on TV Nova.
According to economists, companies importing electronics should also prepare for the problem of a shortage of goods. China produces up to ninety percent of all the world’s products.
To what extent is the Czech Republic in danger of a similar scenario as occurred in China, said Karel Havlíček:
