Some of those people have been arrested for being “untrustworthy” (without any explanation as to why), because they were “born after 1980”, because they had a smartphone or called relatives abroad.
These are all legally permissible acts, yet those people were locked up in the infamous “re-education camps”, the existence of which China initially denied, but now admits. A million Uyghurs would be locked up in it, often for a very long time. They receive “lessons” in “patriotism”, loyalty to the communist party and other propaganda. As forced laborers, they would also make products for export. A number of countries have therefore banned the import of some products from China.
