China owns only 4% of the chip market

Chinese companies were in last place among the world’s chip manufacturers, providing only 4% of the market. This is evidenced by a study by McClean Report following the results of 2021. IC Insights.

Analysts took into account the performance of companies that are not only engaged in contract manufacturing, but also developing their own microcircuits.

The United States has become the leader in all indicators, alone providing 54% of world sales. At the same time, 47% of companies with factories and 68% of developers without their own production facilities are focused in the country.

In second place was South Korea with a market share of 22%. It is noteworthy that 33% of manufacturing plants are located here and only 1% of companies without them.

Taiwan occupies the top three with 9% of the market, 3% of factories and 21% of factoryless enterprises.

Europe and Japan each account for 6% of the market.

China ranks last in the top six countries for the sale of microchips with 4% of the market. The country has only 1% of factories, but quite a lot of factoryless developers – 9%.

Russia is not represented on this list at all, although there is talk of producing its own microchips against the backdrop of tough international sanctions prohibiting the supply of electronics created using American technology.

The share of companies from North America and Asia has increased significantly from 1990 to 2021, while the share of Japan and Europe has fallen sharply. The increase in the share of Asian integrated circuit (IC) suppliers corresponds to a CAGR of 15.9% over this period, almost double the CAGR of the entire IC market of 8.2% over the same 31 years.

It was previously written that Russia was left without chips and supercomputers due to new US sanctions against 20 IT companies. In particular, the restrictions affected the Mikron company, which uses the country’s most advanced 90-nm process technology.

According to the expert, The Russian Federation can establish a completely local production of microcircuits, but only at the level of 1980-2000. The modern economy is arranged in such a way that no country is able to independently produce the required number of chips, because this requires not only components and sophisticated equipment, but also a wide market.
