China has put part of the country on high alert, including the capital, Beijing, and its region, with heavy rains expected as a result of Typhoon Doxuri, which has been sweeping southeast China since the day before yesterday, and is moving north, as its impact has become tangible, according to the China Meteorological Service.
The red alert, which has been in effect since 8:00 p.m. local time, includes a vast area home to hundreds of millions of people, including Beijing, the neighboring city of Tianjin, Hebei provinces in the north and Shandong in the east, as well as part of Henan in the center and Shanxi in the north.
And local media confirmed that this is the first time since 2011 that such a warning of heavy rains has been issued.
Many parks, lakes and waterways in Beijing were closed yesterday in anticipation of flooding, the municipality announced.
