China Offers Peaceful Reunification, Here’s Taiwan’s Answer

Beijing

Prime Minister (PM) China Li Keqiang promised ‘peaceful reunification’ with Taiwan while speaking at the annual meeting of parliament in Beijing. Li also emphasized that Beijing will take firm steps against Taipei’s independence.

Responding to this, the Taipei authorities reminded Beijing to respect the commitment of the Taiwanese people to democracy and freedom. Thus as reported ReutersMonday (6/3/2023).

In the last three years, China has stepped up military activity near Taiwanese territory, which it claims is in response to what it calls “collusion” between Taipei and Taiwan. United States of America (USA) — a major international backer and arms supplier to Taiwan.

In August last year, Beijing held war games around Taiwan territory in response to a controversial visit by then US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taipei.

While speaking at the opening of the annual meeting of the Chinese parliament, the National People’s Congress (NPC), on Sunday (5/2) local time, Li emphasized that Beijing adheres to the principle of ‘one China’. The principle states that Taiwan is part of China, although it does not directly threaten military action.

Li mentioned before 3,000 Chinese parliamentary delegates gathered at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing that the government should implement party policies to “resolve the Taiwan issue” and “take decisive steps to oppose Taiwan’s independence and promote reunification.”

“We must promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait (Taiwan) relations and advance China’s peaceful reunification process,” Li said.
