China leads economic recovery – International Federation of Robotics reports

Frankfurt, Germany

In China, the number of industrial robots sold has increased by 19 percent. This is reported by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) with the preliminary World Robotics Statistics 2020.

“The outlook for the robotics industry is optimistic,” says Milton Guerry, President of the International Federation of Robotics. “In China, where the coronavirus lockdown first came into effect, the economic recovery of the robotics industry started again in 2020. Overall, 167,000 new industrial robots delivered here. ”

The dynamic market in China also has a clearly positive effect on the economy of foreign suppliers. With a sales increase of 24 percent, 123,000 new industrial robots were sold by foreign companies. Japanese companies have a dominant market share. Chinese suppliers delivered 44,000 units in their home market. This corresponds to an increase of 8 percent compared to 2019.

Worldwide, North America and Europe

Worldwide, robot installations fell by 2 percent in 2020 – especially under the influence of the corona pandemic. The result was more moderate than expected.

For the year 2021, the OECD is forecasting global GDP growth of 5.5 percent in 2021 and 4 percent in 2022. However, the situation in the various economies is inconsistent.

Incoming orders in the robotics industry indicate strong growth in North America and Europe in 2021. The order books in the USA are filling up quickly. In Germany, the forecast shows a strong recovery for the current year and signals a trend reversal for the industry. Even better sales figures can be achieved if the current delivery bottlenecks for key components can be overcome quickly.

Reduce the carbon footprint

In addition, the global path to climate neutrality ensures new business. In order to achieve the ambitious climate targets, the national economies have started to scale renewable energies and environmental technologies in unprecedented dimensions. Robotics and automation enable companies of all sizes to produce the components they need. These include, for example, fuel cells for hydrogen-powered cars, batteries for the transport sector and solar cells in the energy segment. A new generation of easy-to-use robotics is helping to optimize production processes and bring manufacturing closer to regional markets at competitive costs.

“Robotics has proven that it enables production to be adjusted quickly and reacts flexibly to changes in demand and smaller batch sizes,” says Milton Guerry. “The advantages of increased productivity safeguard jobs and make companies competitive.”
