China launch aircraft carrier all three are designed and built in-country. This is seen as a major military advance for the Asian superpower.
As reported AFPFriday (17/6/2022), state television CCTV reported that China’s third aircraft carrier was launched at the Shanghai shipyard with great fanfare on Friday (17/6) local time. The third aircraft carrier for the People’s Liberation Army, the official name for the Chinese military, is referred to as ‘Type 003’.
“The first catapult-type aircraft carrier completely designed and built by China,” it said CCTV in the report.
The announcement comes at a time of tension between China and China United States of America (US) has increased significantly in recent weeks, especially regarding Beijing’s actions and remarks on Taiwan which has self-government, but is still considered part of China’s sovereign territory.
China has repeatedly sent warships across the Taiwan Strait, which separates the two territories, and frequently uses its fighter jets to repel freedom of navigation patrols from the US and its allies.
Having the official name Fujian, this new aircraft carrier is technically more sophisticated than other Chinese carriers.
Report Associated Press said the Fujian carrier was equipped with the latest weaponry and launch technology, which made the Chinese carrier’s capabilities rival those of Western carriers.
