China on Thursday morning launched a new weather satellite into orbit from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan province.
The satellite, Fengyun-4B (FY-4B), was launched by a Long March-3B rocket at 12:17 am Beijing time. This is the 372nd flight mission in the Long March rocket series, according to the launch center.
China’s first next-generation geostationary orbiting meteorological satellite, the FY-4B will be used in weather analysis and forecasting, as well as environmental and disaster monitoring.
The satellite and rocket were developed by the Shanghai Academy of Space Flight Technologies and the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technologies, respectively, both under the aegis of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.
The China Meteorological Administration is responsible for the construction and operation of the satellite ground application system.
