China Launches Joint Action Plan for Mental Health Education in Schools

BEIJING, May 12 (Xinhua) — China’s Ministry of Education and 16 other authorities have issued a joint action plan to promote mental health education in schools, colleges and universities.

According to the three-year action plan, vocational schools should include mental health education in their curricula, while colleges and universities should designate mental health as compulsory courses for students. The plan also requires elementary, middle and high schools to teach students about mental health.

The plan added that by 2025, 95 percent of schools, colleges and universities in China are expected to have full- or part-time mental health counsellors. The plan stipulates that every college or university should have at least two mental health counselors, and that every elementary, middle or high school should have at least one counselor.
