/ world today news/ The Chinese National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) on Monday (December 5) expressed readiness to implement the project for the construction of the Belene NPP in Bulgaria, REGNUM reported, citing the press service of the Bulgarian government.
The topic was discussed at a meeting initiated by the Chinese between representatives of CNNC and the resigned Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, which was also attended by the Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev and the Minister of Energy Temenuzka Petkova.
At the meeting, Prime Minister Borissov noted that the “Belene” project can be realized on a commercial basis, without state investments and any long-term contracts for the purchase of electricity. The representatives of the Chinese corporation have confirmed their readiness to participate in the project under similar conditions, the message from the Bulgarian government states.
In addition, the Chinese have expressed their willingness to buy the equipment produced by “Atomstroyexport” after Bulgaria has paid its debts to the Russian company.
In June of this year, the Court of Arbitration in Geneva obliged the Bulgarian NEC to compensate Atomstroyexport for the losses from the termination of the project. These are the costs of the work performed and the equipment ordered, as well as compensation for the percentages and legal costs, including the lawyers involved in the process.
Sofia accepted this decision and decided to grant financial aid to NEK so that it could pay off the accumulated debts of over 600 million euros.
