China start to panic against the rampage of an increasingly contagious Delta variant. As a result, Chinese cities carried out mass coronavirus testing and imposed new travel restrictions.
As reported by AFP, Sunday (1/8/2021) in Jiangsu Province, the spread of the Delta variant was fast, causing clusters. This cluster started with nine workers at the international airport in Nanjing city who tested positive for Corona on July 20.
Authorities have carried out three rounds of testing on Nanjing’s 9.2 million residents and placed hundreds of thousands of people under lockdown. This is done in order to suppress the spread of the virus, which is called variance induced Delta and peak tourist season.
All citizens in China who recently traveled from Nanjing or Zhangjiajie, are also undergoing mass testing. It is known that Zhangjiajie is a tourist city in Hunan province which has imposed a lockdown on all its 1.5 million citizens and closed all tourist attractions since Friday (30/7) local time.
As of today (1/8), China reported 75 new cases of corona, of which 53 came from local transmissions, which are connected to the airport cluster which is reported to have now spread to more than 20 cities and more than a dozen provinces.
There have been reports of new cases on Hainan island – another popular tourist destination – as well as the provinces of Ningxia and Shandong.
Separately, there has also been an increase in coronavirus cases in the flood-hit city of Zhengzhou. This happened after two janitors at the COVID hospital who came from abroad tested positive.
A total of 27 locally transmitted cases have been detected until the authorities ordered mass testing of all 10 million residents of Zhengzhou. As a result of the increase in cases, the head of the city’s Health Commission also had to be fired.
