China introduces C919, a domestic-made passenger aircraft

Beijing

China unveiled the first large domestically produced passenger aircraft at this week’s big air show. Passenger plane named C919 was displayed to the public after obtaining approval from the Chinese aviation regulator.

As reported AFPOn Tuesday (11/8/2022), the C919 passenger plane flew on the runway of the China International Aeronautics and Space Exhibition, then flew into the sky of the city of Zhuhai before landing before hundreds of eyes that witnessed the moment in first person.

Chinese authorities expect the C919 passenger plane, manufactured by the state-owned China Commercial Aircraft Corporation (COMAC), will challenge foreign models such as Boeing 737 MAX And Airbus A320.

Beijing also hopes the domestic passenger plane with the potential for mass commercial production will reduce dependence on foreign technology as relations with the West deteriorate, even as most of the plane’s spare parts come from overseas. .

China’s aviation regulator approved the C919 passenger plane last September. President Xi Jinping he praised the project as a “satisfactory result” and called it an “effort carried out with the will of the country”.

The Chinese flag carrier enthusiastically supported the passenger plane project, although it has not yet received a permit to fly from US and European regulators, nor has it received the green light to go into mass production.

China Eastern Airlines, China’s second-largest passenger airline, said in May that it plans to add four C919 aircraft to its fleet. Local media say the C919 aircraft will enter service in the first quarter of 2023.

COMAC said in a statement that there had been more than 800 orders for the C919 aircraft from dozens of parts.
