China-India Support Resolution on Ukraine, Russia Cancels UN Security Council Voting

New York

Russia cancel the vote of the Security Council (DK) United Nations (UN) for the resolution of the ‘humanitarian’ situation in Ukraine, which is scheduled for Friday (18/3) local time. The vote was canceled due to a lack of support from Russia’s close ally for the resolution it drafted itself.

As reported AFPFriday (18/3/2022), a UN diplomat revealed that Russia failed to secure co-sponsorship from China and India for the draft resolution, meaning the two countries will not support Russia’s proposed resolution.

Russian Ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, later confirmed that the vote on the resolution on humanitarian issues in Ukraine was canceled. The resolution has no chance of being adopted by member states UN Security Council because it will be vetoed by the world powers.

However, Russia hopes that some votes of support show it still has support on the world stage after launching its February 24 invasion of Ukraine which was condemned globally.

Russia is known to have postponed twice voting on a controversial resolution it drafted, which condemns attacks on civilians in Ukraine and calls for a safe route for them.

Russia submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council on Tuesday (15/3) and asked for a vote to be held the next day. But then Russia changed its mind and asked for the vote to be postponed to Thursday (17/3), before being pushed back to Friday (18/3).
