China Implements Harsh Response on US Sanctions: Rare Metals Exports Restricted

The Chine recently announced a harsh response after issuing numerous warnings to UNITED STATES about the sanctions against the middle empire in the technological field. The measure taken by China concerns exports of two rare metals of which China is the main producer and which are essential for the production of semiconductors. This decision comes against a backdrop of growing tensions between the two superpowers, which are engaged in a technological battle.

From August 1, the exports from Gaul and Germany will require a licence prior to being authorized, according to a directive published by the Department of Commerce and the chinese customs. Moreover, the final recipients of these exports as well as the purpose of their use must be specified, adding an extra layer of control. The justification put forward by the Chinese government is the preservation of national security and interests. Gallium, which is found in integrated circuits, LEDs and photovoltaic panels in particular, is considered a critical raw material by the European Union.

According to a 2020 European Commission report, the Chine accounts for 80% of global gallium production. As to germanium, essential for fiber optics and infrared, 80% of its production also comes from China, according to the same report. These Chinese restriction measures come in a context where the United States has placed several Chinese companies on its blacklist in recent years, to exclude them from US tech supply chainsespecially the most advanced chips.

China, which aspires to become self-sufficient in semiconductor design, believes that these US measures are aimed at maintaining its supremacy in this field and has repeatedly called for the lifting of US sanctions. Last year, Beijing even turned to the WTO to try to lift US sanctions. washington made “impediment to normal international trade in goods, especially chips, and threatens the stability of the global industrial supply chain”accused the Chinese Ministry of Commerce at the time.

President Xi Jinping has repeatedly denounced the repression of Westerners against his country and mentioned the technological war raging between the United States and the middle empire. Escalating tensions between China and the United States highlight the growing technological rivalry between the two countries. Rare metals, such as gallium and germanium, play a crucial role in the manufacture of advanced technological products. Control of these strategic resources provides a significant advantage in the field of semiconductors, which are essential for many sectors, including computing, telecommunications and renewable energy.
