China “hovered around” the US military in a mock “Taiwan war exercise” – “Failed miserably!” | World

General John Hyten urged the United States to rethink its military strategy in light of the results of the exercise which he said “failed miserably”. The Pentagon declined to provide the wargame’s name because it remains classified, but a defense official told Defense One that the exercise took place last October and revolved around a battle for Taiwan.

General Hyten told an audience at the launch of the Institute for Emerging Technologies on Monday that China was able to read the US maneuvers.

He said: “Without exaggerating the problem, it has failed miserably.

“An aggressive red team that has been studying the United States for 20 years has just surrounded us.

“They knew exactly what we were going to do before we did it. “

The October exercise would have been a test for a new combat strategy, but the concept drew heavily on the same ideas the United States has used for decades.

After the loss, Gen. Hyten urged the United States to prepare for a revised concept of joint combat by 2030.

General Hyten explained that China has been studying US tactics for years and has a numerical advantage.

“Imagine what our actual competitors have been doing over the past 20 years, probably with even more attention, with more numbers,” Mr. Hyten said.

“So we had to take a step back and look wide and say, ‘OK, what did we miss? “”

One of the main reasons for the loss was the aggregation of forces that acted like a double-edged sword.

Pooling ships, airplanes, and ground forces strengthened military might in one area, but also turned them into sitting ducks.

Additionally, General Hyten explained that the United States relies too much on information to win wars.

“We basically tried an information dominance structure, where information was ubiquitous in our forces,” General Hyten explained.

“Just as it was in the first Gulf War, just as it has been for 20 years, as everyone in the world, including China and Russia, has seen us do for the past 30 years. years.

“Well, what if right from the start this information is not available? And this is the big problem that we faced.

News of the United States’ strategic overhaul comes as the United States completes its withdrawal from the Middle East.

Earlier this month, Joe Biden announced the end of military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

According to General Hyten, the withdrawal will allow US forces to be redirected to deal with threats posed by China and Russia.

The remarks also come a month after President Xi Jinping threatened foreign powers with “their heads bleeding” if they attempt to interfere in Chinese affairs.
