Chinese scientists have begun drilling a 10,000 meter hole into the Earth’s crust. It is China’s deepest drilling ever, which began on Tuesday in the oil-rich Xinjiang region, Bloomberg reported, citing the official Xinhua news agency.
It will penetrate more than 10 continental layers or layers of rock, which includes rocks dating back about 145 million years.
“The construction difficulty of the drilling project can be compared to a large truck moving on two thin steel cables,” Sun Jinsheng, a scientist at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, told Xinhua.
The project will provide data on the Earth’s internal structure while also testing deep underground drilling technologies, according to China National Petroleum Corp. who leads the project. Drilling is expected to take 457 days.
President Xi Jinping called for more progress in exploring the Earth’s depths in a speech to some of the country’s top scientists in 2021. Such work can identify mineral and energy resources and help assess the risks of environmental disasters, such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
The deepest man-made hole on Earth is still the Russian Kola borehole, which reached a depth of 12,262 meters in 1989 after 20 years of drilling.
