In another video, several fire trucks are seen surrounded by police in hazmat suits parked near a residential block. “All workers are requested to return to their lodgings, refrain from associating with a small minority of illegal elements,” one person says through a loudspeaker in the video.
Foxconn later confirmed the riots. The Taiwanese company said workers had indeed complained about wages and conditions at the factory.
On the same occasion, the company also denied other rumors that were developing. That they had welcomed a new employee with positive Covid-19 staff at the world’s largest iPhone maker, which caused panic among existing workers.
“As regards any violence, the company will continue to communicate with employees and the government to prevent similar incidents from happening again,” the Taiwanese tech giant said in a statement.
Foxconn is also known by its official name Hon Hai Precision Industry. The company is the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer and assembles gadgets for many international brands.
Apple’s main subcontractor recently saw a spike in COVID-19 cases in Zhengzhou. This has led the company to shut down sprawling complexes in an effort to control the virus.
The facility, which has been dubbed “iPhone City,” has operated in a “closed circle” ever since. Footage has emerged this month of panicked workers fleeing the site on foot after allegations of poor conditions at the facility.
Several employees later recounted scenes of chaos and disorder in the workshop and dormitory complex. The factory is believed to have around 200,000 workers.
Meanwhile, a Weibo hashtag about “Foxconn riot” was reportedly censored starting Wednesday afternoon. But several text posts referring to the major factory protests remain active.
