China GAC Develops Safe and Efficient Liquid Ammonia Fuel Car Engine: A Step Towards Reducing Carbon Emissions

BEIJING – Company China Guzngzhou Automotive Group Co. (GAC) has developed a 2.0 liter engine capable of burning liquid ammonia (NH3) safely and efficiently. GAC claims a peak power output of 120 kW (161 hp), and a reduction carbon emissions 90% compared to conventional fuels.

The development of the world’s first car engine to use ammonia adds new solutions to reduce carbon emissions. This step is positive to be developed with battery-powered electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cells.

Given that the GAC engine still appears to be producing carbon dioxide, perhaps another fuel source could be added. That makes sense, since low flame propagation rates in ammonia tend to give engines a hard time at high RPMs or low engine loads.

“We have overcome the problem of ammonia being difficult to burn quickly and put the fuel to use in the passenger car industry. Its value for society and for commercial use is to be reckoned with,” Qi Hongzhong from GAC’s research and development center told reporters quoted from the Bloomberg page, Tuesday (27/6/2023).

The engine is still in the early stages of development, but represents a significant step forward in the development of ammonia as a viable alternative fuel for transportation. It remains to be seen whether ammonia will become the main fuel for cars.

However, GAC’s announcement is a sign that the company is committed to exploring alternative fuel options and reducing its carbon footprint. Ammonia carries hydrogen better than hydrogen carries hydrogen, in some ways.

Ammonia is easier to handle, as it is liquid at ambient temperature, eliminating the need for energy-hungry cryogenic compression or liquefaction equipment. Ammonia is a potential clean fuel for vehicles because it is carbon-free and can be produced from renewable sources.
