BEIJING – Military China trailing warships United States of America (USA) while passing through the Strait Taiwan sensitive on Saturday (19/12).

The Chinese military has denounced such US missions as sending “flirtatious glances” to supporters of Taiwan independence.

China claims Taiwan as its territory. Beijing is angered by increased US support for the island, including arms sales and warships sailing through the Taiwan Strait.

The US Navy said, “The guided missile destroyer USS Mustin made regular transit of the Taiwan Strait (on) December 19 in accordance with international law.” (Also Read: The Severity of the COVID-19 Outbreak in the US, the Hospital Changes the Parking Lot into a Treatment Room)

“The transit of ships through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates US commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific,” said a US military statement. (See Infographic: Putin’s Luxurious Living, With Wealth Reaching Rp.3,066 T)

China’s military in a statement released by the Eastern Theater Command said its air force and navy were following and monitoring the entire ship.

“Such missions deliberately raise the temperature of the Taiwan problem, because they fear the calm in the Taiwan Strait, and send flirtatious glances to the Taiwanese independence forces, seriously jeopardizing peace and stability in the strait,” said a Chinese military statement.

“The United States is engaged in a show of force and is trying to use Taiwan as a pawn for its own egotistical strategic goals,” the Chinese military said.

In Taipei, the Taiwan Defense Ministry said the US ship had moved south and the situation was as usual.

Beijing believes Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen is determined to declare official independence for the island. Taiwan’s independence is a red line for Beijing.

Tsai said Taiwan was already an independent country called the Republic of China, its official name.

Tsai has made strengthening Taiwan’s armed forces a priority in the face of repeated Chinese military activity near the island, including this year sending fighter jets across the median line of the Taiwan Strait.
