Beijing accused Berlin today of raising security risks in the Taiwan Strait, a day after two German warships passed through the disputed sea lane that separates Taiwan from China.
“The behavior of the German side increases security risks and sends the wrong messages,” Chinese military spokesman Li Xi said in a statement. He added that Beijing’s troops in the region “will resolutely deal with all threats and provocations.”
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said yesterday that the frigate Baden-Württemberg and an accompanying supply vessel were heading towards the site or transiting the Straits.
US and Canadian warships have sailed through the Taiwan Strait several times in recent months, prompting the Chinese military to be put on “high alert”.
China considers Taiwan – which has its own democratically elected government – part of its territory and has not ruled out using force to bring the island under its control.
