China Faces Record-Breaking Heat Wave: Temperatures Soar and Citizens Suffer

Jakarta

Recently, China has had the hottest days in its history. The National Climate Center (NCC) records that the average temperature in China is 40 degrees Celsius.

Beijing is the region most affected by the heat wave. Followed by several other regions such as Hebei and Tianjin.

“From June 21-23, 22 weather observation points in North China recorded historically high temperatures, and a total of 450,000 square kilometers of land experienced temperatures exceeding 37 degrees Celsius in recent days,” the NCC said. Global Times, Tuesday (4/7/2023).

“Beijing recorded consecutive days of temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius in June,” he continued.

Complaints of Chinese Citizens

Hot temperatures make Chinese people complain because they have never felt summer like today. One of them was experienced by a 53-year-old Beijing resident surnamed Su.

Su said the recent heat made it feel like it was being baked in an oven.

“I’ve lived in Beijing for three decades, but I’ve never experienced a summer this hot,” he said.

“Being out in Beijing these days is like surfing in an oven,” joked Su.

To help outdoor workers deal with the heat, Beijing has set up ‘cooling booths’. They provide cold water, an air-conditioned area and sometimes free laundry service.

The NCC said that scorching temperatures in North China are extremely rare. It is estimated that the heat wave will continue to hit parts of North and Southwest China, with temperatures 1 degree Celsius to 2 degrees Celsius higher than previous years.

“This hot cycle is strong, long lasting, and widespread,” said Zhao Wei, chief forecaster of the Beijing Meteorological Station.

“The reason behind this is that the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area is under a warmer air mass than the past few days and the effect will last for a while. Under the influence of high pressure, the sky is clear without clouds, which makes solar radiation easier generate heat,” he explained.

This hot weather has increased the demand for sun protection products, such as face bikinis or face coverings, sleeves, and masks. Data from Chinese e-commerce platforms shows that people in Beijing, Guangdong and Jiangsu spend the most on sun protection items.
