A Ms. Guo explained, “for the safety of the elderly and children, the family decided to rest in the car.” The demand for hotel rooms, notably family suites on lower floors, surged following the earthquakes, with one hotel in Xingqing District reporting over 20 bookings.
The seismic activity also fueled the spread of misinformation. A false news report claiming a major earthquake would strike Ningxia at 3 a.m. circulated online, causing widespread anxiety. Authorities quickly debunked the rumor, identifying the source as Cheng Moumou, a volunteer with the Shizuishan City Blue Sky Rescue Team. The rescue team issued a public apology and dismissed Cheng Moumou.
Ding Fenghe, chief engineer of the Ningxia Seismological Observatory, attributed the intensity of the felt tremors to the geological characteristics of the Yinchuan fault basin.
