An earthquake in China killed at least 95 people on Monday. Dozens of others were injured. The magnitude 6.1 quake struck in the Gansu-Qinghai border area in central China.
According to authorities, the death toll may still rise. At least two hundred injured people have been pulled from the rubble, reports the Chinese state news agency Xinhua. Several buildings have collapsed and power has been cut in many neighborhoods.
The epicenter was about 100 kilometers from the city of Lanzhou in the northwestern province of Gansu, the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) reported. 86 people were killed in Gansu. At least nine people were killed in neighboring Qinghai.
China’s National Disaster Relief Commission and the Ministry of Emergency Management have raised the state of emergency to level four.
A rescue team has been sent to the affected areas to assess the impact of the disaster and provide guidance for local relief operations, authorities said. The extent of the disaster is not yet clear.
