China Dominates Global Patents Filing: Is the United States Losing Its Innovation Edge?

The Chine dominates the list of countries with the highest number of patents filed, an impressive achievement that highlights the country’s commitment to innovation and research. According to data from the World Intellectual Property Organization (OMI), in 2021, China filed a total of 607,758 patents, i.e. 37.8% of patents granted worldwide. This puts China far ahead the United States, which has filed 286,205 patents, accounting for 17.8% of the total. THE Japan follows with 256,890 patentsor 16% of the total.

China’s patent dominance spans a wide range of sectors. China topped the rankings in 29 of the total 36 areas, including computer technology, electrical machinery and digital communication.
